About Mithrakulam

Committed to uplifting the marginalized through dignity, inclusion, and sustainable support.

Our Story

Compassion in Action. Inclusion in Practice.

Mithrakulam Charitable Trust is a registered non-profit organization (Reg. 131/IV/2021) based in Ernakulam, Kerala. We are a “commune of compassion,” dedicated to uplifting marginalized communities through sustainable living, skill development, and mutual support.

Unlike traditional charities that rely on monetary donations, we operate on a model of resource optimization and CSR collaboration. We believe dignity is not given; it is built through shared responsibility and equal opportunity

Our Process

Steps to Your Dream Outdoor Space

1. Inclusion

Governance by a diverse board: 50% women, 10% transgender, and 2% persons with disabilities.

2. Dignity

We do not offer "charity" in the traditional sense; we offer tools, training, and community so individuals can stand on their own feet.

3. Sustainability

From upcycling clothes to manufacturing LED bulbs, our initiatives protect the planet while providing livelihoods.

Our Vision

To create a society where every individual—regardless of gender, age, ability, or status—can live with dignity, contribute meaningfully, and find a supportive “kith and kin” in times of need.

Who We Serve

Our doors are open to those often overlooked by society:

  • Marginalized Genders: Transgender individuals and LGBT+ community members.

  • Vulnerable Families: Single parents, senior citizens, and those in family crises.

  • Persons with Disabilities: Individuals seeking inclusive living and work opportunities.

The Mithrakulam Commune: Our Heartbeat

At the center of our work is the Mithrakulam Commune, an inclusive living space where members learn, grow, and support one another. It is a home for those facing crisis—be it from family rejection, social exclusion, or economic hardship. Within this safe and nurturing environment, which has a zero-tolerance policy for substance abuse, members find not just shelter, but a family. Here, they participate in skill-building workshops, contribute to our social enterprises, and become mentors to others, creating a virtuous cycle of empowerment.

A Governance Model Built on Equality

To ensure our leadership reflects the community we serve, Mithrakulam has adopted a revolutionary governance structure. Our board of trustees is a testament to our commitment to inclusion:

  • 50% of our trustees are Women, ensuring female leadership is at the core of our decision-making.

  • 10% of our trustees are Transgender, guaranteeing a voice for one of the most marginalized communities.

  • 2% of our trustees are Persons with Disabilities, embedding the principles of accessibility and universal design into our DNA.

This structure is not symbolic; it is functional. It ensures that our strategies and programs are co-created with, and not just for, the people we aim to serve.

Our Unique "No-Donation" Policy

Mithrakulam Charitable Trust does not accept direct monetary donations. This is a conscious choice designed to shift the paradigm from dependency to partnership. Instead, we fuel our mission through two powerful channels:

  1. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Collaborations: We partner with corporations and businesses to fund and scale our initiatives. This creates a relationship built on shared goals and measurable impact, rather than one-way charity.

  2. Material Contributions & Resource Banks: We run extensive “banks” for used clothes, second-hand medical equipment, books, and toys. These collected goods are repaired, upcycled, or loaned out, turning potential waste into valuable community assets.
